Worldwide, four million babies die in the newborn period and more than 500,000 women die from complications of pregnancy or childbirth each year. However, maternal and newborn health does not figure prominently in health budgets and interventions known to avert death and disability are unavailable in many countries. To influence policy actions and to spotlight maternal and neonatal health, the Academy for Educational Development (AED) developed REDUCE-ALIVE to raise the profile of women's and newborn health and identify advocacy actions champions can take to facilitate changes in health policies.

REDUCE-ALIVE stimulates policy dialogue and strategic planning on maternal and newborn health by mobilizing decision makers to take appropriate action to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity and to increase newborn survival. The advocacy process using REDUCE-ALIVE brings together local champions of maternal and newborn health issues and energizes them around a coherent set of goals.
The REDUCE-ALIVE process uses interactive computer models to estimate the consequences of poor maternal health and care, such as:
Through the REDUCE-ALIVE process country stakeholders transform the information generated from the computer model into targeted advocacy messages to assist policy makers and health professionals to see the cost of doing nothing vs. implementing an intervention that will assist in preventing maternal mortality and disability and increasing newborn survival. (See "How REDUCE-ALIVE is Applied")

REDUCE-ALIVE projects the survival, health, and economic impact of maintaining the status quo versus implementing known interventions. REDUCE-ALIVE allows country stakeholders to create sound arguments for prioritizing maternal health in policy formulation, strategy development, and resource allocation.
REDUCE-ALIVE provides a framework for discussion on the most appropriate interventions in a given setting. It does not compare the cost-effectiveness of different interventions or prioritize them. Each country determines the appropriate mix.

The REDUCE components examine health and obstetric factors contributing to maternal mortality, morbidity, disabilities, and economic productivity losses, such as:
The ALIVE component is an advocacy model for increasing newborn survival. ALIVE builds on REDUCE and adds models that affect the newborn:
